Rep Earle Banks Sentencing
SUMMARY: State lawmaker Earl Banks pleaded guilty to lying on his 2018 tax returns and was sentenced to two years probation. Despite the federal prosecutor arguing for a sentence of 8-14 months behind bars, the judge decided to give Banks probation due to his first-time offender status and the support he received from various individuals, including national NAACP president Derrick Johnson. Banks has already paid a significant amount of the money owed to the IRS and will go on a payment plan to pay the rest. He plans to remain in office as the Mississippi Constitution does not require resignation for tax offenses, and he ran unopposed in the fall election.
