Seed Heads – Winter Beauty and Food for Birds
SUMMARY: Humans and pollinators alike are drawn to vibrant flowers, although we often overlook the beauty of seed heads that form after the blossoms drop. These seed heads have their own aesthetic appeal and functionality, serving as crucial food sources for birds, particularly during winter. Grasses and sedges also provide nutritious seeds that are vital for avian diets. Observers can spot birds like Carolina Chickadees and Red-winged Blackbirds foraging for seeds in natural areas. Many seed heads are not only functional but also attractive, with some offering visual interest in floral arrangements. Winter is an ideal season to appreciate the unique charm of seed heads in the landscape.

USM’s Associate VP Dr. Leila Hamdan emphasizes that this initiative will aid in workforce development and blue economy growth, particularly for students in USM’s Ocean Engineering program. The ROV will support restoration projects addressing habitat damage from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, facilitating significant scientific discoveries.
