Columbus Police Department steps up recruitment efforts
SUMMARY: Columbus Police Chief Joseph Daughtry and Mayor Keith Gaskin recognized that low salaries are causing a recruitment problem in the Columbus Police Department. The department has only 40 officers, down from 90, with a starting salary of $40,000 for new hires. Daughtry emphasized the importance of properly compensating officers who put their lives on the line daily. He also announced the implementation of a new pay scale that allows for salary increases based on experience and certifications. The changes are aimed at increasing recruitment and retaining experienced officers in the department.
