Mississippi sheriff aims to avoid liability from federal lawsuit over torture of Black men
SUMMARY: Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey has asked a federal court to dismiss a civil lawsuit against him regarding the torture of two Black men by former deputies. The plaintiffs, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker, are seeking $400 million in damages. Bailey's attorney argues that he should be protected by “qualified immunity,” a concept that shields police officers from civil penalties. The lawsuit alleges that the abuse was a longstanding issue within the department. The former deputies pleaded guilty to state and federal charges for the torture, while Bailey promised to make changes within the department after their guilty pleas.
