Black farmers, landowners take on US Department of Agriculture
SUMMARY: Hundreds of black farmers and landowners gathered in Columbus, Mississippi to sign a petition that is heading to Congress. The petition is aimed at addressing the issue of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) withholding payments from black farmers for over two decades. Black farmers led a class action lawsuit against the USDA in 1999, claiming racial discrimination and were awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in restitution. However, nearly 25 years later, these farmers still haven't been properly compensated. The farmers are now being asked to fill out a 40-page application to receive compensation, which they believe is unfair compared to previous settlements.
