SUMMARY: Cole Blalock, a Petal native, has been practicing magic for over 20 years, transitioning from a hobby to a full-time career. After serving a religious mission in Brazil, Blalock faced personal struggles, including a near-suicidal experience in 2019, which led him to incorporate self-worth themes into his magic. Today, Blalock travels nationwide, using his performances to promote mental health awareness, particularly among young people. He also works with a Louisiana organization helping underprivileged students. Blalock is preparing for a return to Brazil to offer motivational magic shows for free, with a fundraising goal of \$5,000.

Spice of Life: How Hot Sauce is Part of the Culinary Identity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast
SUMMARY: Before moving to the Gulf Coast in 1992, hot sauce was not part of my diet. The Gulf Coast’s unique food culture, featuring po-boys and gumbo, introduced me to hot sauces, with Tabasco being the most popular. Created over 150 years ago on Avery Island by Edmund McIlhenny, Tabasco now comes in various flavors and is sold worldwide. However, my favorite is Mexico’s Valentina, made with puya chilis from Jalisco. It’s thicker, less vinegary, and has a strong chili flavor, available in hot and extra hot varieties. I love using Valentina on street tacos, eggs, grilled cheese, and more.

Enid Lake is a springtime favorite for crappie, while Okatibbee Reservoir offers laid-back fishing for bass and catfish. Bonus spots include Lake Bill Waller for trophy bass and Paul B. Johnson State Park’s Geiger Lake. Fishing here is a beloved tradition and a great way to enjoy Mississippi’s outdoors. Don’t forget sunscreen!
