A year after air conditioning came to Parchman, most of Mississippi’s prisons are still without relief from the heat

SUMMARY: Despite a year of conditioning installation at Mississippi's oldest prison, individuals in Unit 29 and other prisons still endure sweltering heat due to constraints. The heat index is expected to reach up to 115 degrees, posing risks. The Mississippi Corrections Commissioner estimates that it will take another year and a half to air conditioning to these facilities. In the meantime, the Department of Corrections plans to use industrial fans and provide ice, ice , and electrolyte drinks for relief. Extreme heat can have severe consequences, and previous reports have found associations between high temperatures and prison deaths.

Starkville Police charge three people in an aggravated assault case

SUMMARY: On May 17th at 12:23 a.m., Starkville responded to gunshots at the intersection of South Montgomery Street and Yellow Jacket . Three individuals were charged in the incident: Marcuevas Guido with aggravated assault, Cedric Lucious with disorderly conduct and possession of a stolen firearm, and Cornelius Hendrix with accessory after the fact. A vehicle was damaged, but no injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected.
