Mississippians react to President Biden’s executive action on gun control

SUMMARY: President Biden has taken executive action to address gun violence in the country. This includes targeting stabilizing braces for pistols and so-called ghost guns, firearms without serial numbers that can be assembled at home. Biden believes there is no excuse for the gun violence plaguing the nation. He is calling for an assault weapons ban and wants a review of how stabilizing braces are regulated. Gun industry members see these measures as stripping Americans of their rights, while others believe investing in community violence interventions and closing loopholes will help. Gun shop owners suggest fighting the black market to prevent criminals from obtaining firearms.

When it comes to tightening the restrictions on as the President put it “ghost guns”, pistol stabilizing braces, and investing in community violence interventions, people of Jackson have its support while others in the gun industry see deliberate misunderstandings and certain Americans getting stripped of their rights.

Representatives from the Mississippi Aquarium joined WTVA 9 News TODAY to talk about their new facility, a virtual reality experience and the year of the penguin.

Are the new parking meters confusing?

Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes is addressing confusion about new parking meters downtown, activated on May 1st. Stokes received numerous complaints about parking tickets despite correct meter use. He proposes a 90-day grace period to educate people on using the meters properly. Stokes stated, “Instead of giving citizens tickets they do not deserve, we need a 90-day grace period to educate them on meter usage.”

Long-time Jackson Church moving to Ridgeland

St. Richard Catholic School has purchased the Meadowbrook property for $2.5 million and plans to move in by next year. Father Joe Tonos of St. Richard welcomed the move, citing previous enrollment and infrastructure issues at their old location. The move is viewed positively by faculty, parents, and church members, with hopes for stronger community engagement. Meanwhile, existing buildings at St. Richard will be repurposed for parish use.
