10 p.m. – Sextortion bill named “Walker’s Law” passes, signed by governor
SUMMARY: A family in Starkville lost a loved one in an online extortion plot, prompting state lawmakers to pass two laws to protect children from sextortion. Brian Montgomery, who lost his son Walker to the tragic incident, expressed gratitude for the community's support in passing House Bill 1196 and House Bill 1126. These laws address the criminal aspect of sextortion and crack down on social media sites to prevent similar incidents. While the laws may not entirely eliminate sextortion, lawmakers hope they will prevent other children from becoming victims. Montgomery advises parents to monitor their children's online activity and restrict phone usage in private settings.
“Walker's Law,” named after a Starkville teen who took his life, has been signed by Gov. Tate Reeves.
