Yes, it’s in the dictionary: ‘Brain rot’ named Oxford Word of the Year
SUMMARY: Oxford University Press has chosen “brain rot” as its Word of the Year for 2023, defined as the deterioration of mental state due to excessive consumption of trivial online content. This slang term saw a 230% increase in usage this year and reflects concerns about the impact of low-quality content on our lives. While it may seem contemporary, its first recorded use was in Thoreau’s 1854 “Walden.” This choice highlights society’s ongoing dialogue about technology and its effects on well-being, following previous years’ selections that reveal the influence of internet culture on language.

SUMMARY: Ty Pinkins, a U.S. Army veteran and attorney, is leaving the Democratic Party after two statewide runs and will run as an independent for the U.S. Senate in 2026. Pinkins cited party corruption, instability, and a prioritization of fundraising over values as reasons for his departure. He criticized both major parties for focusing on money over issues such as healthcare and education and shared his experience of being sidelined by party officials during his previous campaigns. Despite shedding his Democratic affiliation, Pinkins remains committed to representing the people and aims to challenge political establishment influence in his upcoming Senate bid.
