Winston County Sheriff details his protocols if inmate escapes
SUMMARY: Time is crucial when an inmate escapes from jail or prison, says Winston County Sheriff Jason Pugh. His deputies are trained to notify surrounding law enforcement agencies and the public immediately. Mississippi’s challenging terrain and extreme temperatures make tracking escapees difficult, but it is even harder for the inmates themselves. In one case, an inmate surrendered and received an additional five years to their sentence because they couldn’t handle the freezing conditions. However, with advancements in drone technology, most pursuits in Winston County end within minutes. The sheriff’s department uses drones to quickly locate and apprehend escapees.
