What is the electoral college?
SUMMARY: The Electoral College has sparked significant debate, with two-thirds of Americans favoring a switch to a popular vote for presidential elections. The system allocates electors to states based on population, complicating direct voter influence. Critics highlight instances where candidates lost the popular vote yet won the presidency, while supporters argue it encourages candidates to engage beyond major urban areas. The issue gained prominence after Hillary Clinton won the popular vote but lost the 2016 election due to the Electoral College. The divide is evident, with Democrats more supportive of a popular vote approach. What are your thoughts on this debate?

Along with a strong second quarter rebound for the US economy, some red flags
SUMMARY: The U.S. economy grew unexpectedly at a 3% annual rate in Q2 2025, rebounding from a 0.5% contraction in Q1 caused by businesses stockpiling imports ahead of President Trump’s tariffs. Despite this bounce, consumers and businesses remain cautious due to uncertainty from trade policies. The growth was largely driven by a sharp drop in imports and moderate consumer spending gains, while private investment and government spending declined. Core economic strength slowed, and inflation pressures eased, with rates falling to near the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Trump praised the growth and urged rate cuts, though many economists warn tariffs risk raising costs and harming long-term efficiency.

West coast faces tsunami threats after powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Russia
SUMMARY: A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s coast, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuations across more than 20 countries, including the US west coast, Hawaii, Alaska, and Japan. Hawaii’s beaches were evacuated as officials warned of potential waves six feet or higher, urging residents and tourists to seek higher ground. California and Oregon coasts also faced warnings, while Alaska’s National Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts. Japan ordered evacuations, with some moving to high buildings. Several US military bases in the tsunami path evacuated families and prepared for impact. The National Weather Service cautioned the danger could persist for hours after the initial wave.
As a result of an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hitting Russia’s coast, a slew of small tsunamis spread across the Pacific Coast, impacting Russia, Japan and the United States as warnings and advisories remain in effect for some areas.
The earthquake ranks among the four strongest earthquakes this century, and among the eight strongest since 1900, according to the USGS.
