West Point, Clay County install new tornado sirens

SUMMARY: West Point/Clay County Emergency Management Director Torrey Williams announced that new, modernized sirens have been installed in key areas identified via 911 address maps. Unlike previous models, these sirens activate based on polygon mapping from weather services, allowing for more targeted alerts. Williams emphasized the importance of these sirens for community safety during severe weather, despite acknowledging that three existing sirens in West Point are malfunctioning. The cost of five new sirens is $185,000, funded mainly through MEMA and FEMA grants with contributions from the Clay County Board of Supervisors. Further efforts are underway to address coverage gaps and replace non-operational sirens.
