Voter rights, access to be forefront of Mississippi Democratic convention
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Democratic Party will hold its annual convention on Saturday, focusing on electing a new executive committee and defining the party’s platform. Under the leadership of State Rep. Cheikh Taylor, the party aims to address issues such as Medicaid expansion, public school funding, teacher pay raises, a $15 minimum wage, and affordable housing. A key topic is the restoration of voting rights post-incarceration, highlighting the convoluted and restrictive current processes. The party also seeks to improve voter access by advocating for measures like early voting and online registration. The convention’s outcomes will be presented at the Democratic National Convention in August.

A new perspective: Mississippi billionaire Tommy Duff outlines vision for future of Magnolia State
SUMMARY: Mississippi billionaire Tommy Duff, at a GOP dinner, delivered a compelling political speech outlining his vision for the state without announcing a gubernatorial bid. Praising President Trump’s outsider approach, Duff paralleled their business backgrounds, detailing his success growing Southern Tire Mart and managing over 20 companies through Duff Capital Investors. He highlighted workforce challenges, especially brain drain, and applauded efforts to foster business-friendly environments and attract major companies like Toyota and Amazon. Duff emphasized the need for bold leadership, workforce development, and deregulation to advance Mississippi beyond its regional peers. Though he stopped short of declaring a run, his speech positioned him as a major GOP contender.

Ole Miss football comes in at No. 21 in AP preseason poll
SUMMARY: Football season is heating up in Mississippi as Ole Miss is ranked No. 21 in the Associated Press preseason top 25 for 2025-26. Despite losing key players to the NFL Draft and returning few starters, Lane Kiffin’s program remains highly regarded. Last season, Ole Miss narrowly missed the College Football Playoff after tough losses but achieved double-digit wins. Austin Simmons takes over quarterback from Jaxson Dart, with returning and transfer wide receivers bolstering the offense. Running backs and offensive linemen blend returning talent with new transfers. Defensively, coach Pete Golding rebuilds after key departures, confident in his mix of returners and newcomers. The Rebels open the season against Georgia State on August 30. Mississippi State and Southern Miss received no top 25 votes.
