Mississippi appealing mail-in absentee ballot ruling to U.S. Supreme Court
SUMMARY: Mississippi officials are appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn an appellate court ruling that struck down the state’s five-day grace period for mail-in absentee ballots to arrive after Election Day. The state’s attorneys argue that the law aligns with state rights, while the Republican National Committee, state Republican Party, and Libertarian Party assert that only Congress can set federal election parameters. A three-judge panel of the Fifth Circuit Court overturned an earlier ruling in favor of the state. The outcome could affect similar laws in other states. The case does not impact Mississippi’s current local elections.
