Victims of Interstate 59 accident identified
SUMMARY: Thank you for joining us at Pine Belt. I’m Karrie Leggett-Brown, and we start with an update on last Friday’s major traffic jam on I-59 in Hattiesburg. According to Hattiesburg Police, Peggy Heron and Lisa Foster tragically died as a result of the accident. One other person involved was in critical condition but is now reported as stable. Additionally, three others received minor injuries. The investigation into the exact details of the incident is still ongoing.

Hub City Special Olympics returns to PCS campus
SUMMARY: Kids from the Pine Belt showcased their talents at the annual Hub City Special Olympics held at Presbyterian Christian School. Over 200 volunteers helped organize activities like softball, cornhole, and soccer, creating a memorable experience for participants. This event, returning after three years, was inspired by a local pediatrician’s son and aims to involve the community in supporting athletes with developmental disabilities. Gareth Bonner from PCS emphasizes the importance of service in the community. Moving forward, top performers may advance to district and regional competitions. The next special Olympics will take place at Camp Shelby from November 1st to 3rd, 2024.

Town of Sumrall has several public projects under way at same time
SUMMARY: Improvement projects are advancing in downtown Som, with increased contractor activity noted. Mayor Joel Lofton highlighted ongoing efforts, including a sidewalk improvement project and an important drainage initiative in Ward 4. This project addresses long-standing drainage issues and is funded mainly by ARPA COVID grant funds. Crews have begun staging equipment and work started last week. Additionally, a new sewage project will tackle water infiltration and upgrade about half of the town’s sewer system across several wards. Overall, the town is making significant strides in enhancing infrastructure and addressing critical issues.

Federal funding to help Lamar, Perry counties bolster law enforcement staffs
SUMMARY: New federal grants are enabling Lamar and Perry counties in the Pine Belt to hire additional law enforcement officers. The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office will employ four new deputies, funded by a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Justice Department, aimed at enhancing response times for service calls. Perry County will use a $250,000 grant to hire two deputies, addressing the challenges of its large, rural landscape. Both counties are required to contribute matching fundsโ38% for Lamar and 32% for Perry. Montgomery County also received a grant for one additional officer at nearly $97,000.
