USM Foundation receives record-breaking donations

SUMMARY: The University of Southern Mississippi has awarded a record-breaking number of scholarship money this past school year. The university gave out more than five million dollars to students through donations from alumni and friends. Stacie Mercier, the executive director of the USM Foundation, says that it is important to give Pell eligible and first-generation students a chance to earn an education. Many of the university's students have to work their way through school, and having the opportunity for a scholarship can make a significant difference. The amount of the scholarship is not always the most important factor, but it provides crucial support for students.

The university gave out more than $5 million to students through donations from alumni and friends.
