US retailers brace for potential pain from a longshoremen’s strike
SUMMARY: A potential longshoremen’s strike could disrupt the supply chain just before the holiday shopping season, prompting fears of delays and increased costs for companies and consumers. The Biden administration is encouraging negotiations between the union and port operators before contracts expire, but no meetings are scheduled. The union demands higher wages and a ban on automation. Organizations like the Toy Association are urging government intervention to prevent a strike. Past interventions show the administration’s cautious approach. The strike could exacerbate existing supply chain issues, causing further inflation and affecting small businesses particularly hard amid heightened competition for goods.
