University of Mississippi Medical Center acquires hospital in Canton
SUMMARY: The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has acquired Merit Health Madison, Canton’s only hospital, expanding its operations as UMMC Madison. The acquisition, finalized on May 1, follows a partnership since 2019 when UMMC physicians began performing procedures there. The 67-bed hospital will now be fully integrated into UMMC’s academic and healthcare system, addressing past operational challenges like differing electronic medical record systems. The acquisition will expand patient care capacity and ease pressures on UMMC’s main Jackson campus. UMMC Madison will operate as a community hospital, offering diverse services and serving as a training site for UMMC students, residents, and fellows.

Mississippi ACLU files federal lawsuit challenging constitutionality of anti-DEI bill
SUMMARY: The Mississippi ACLU, along with the Mississippi Center for Justice and others, filed a federal lawsuit challenging House Bill 1193, a law banning public schools and colleges from teaching diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) topics related to race, sex, gender identity, and more. The suit, naming four state education boards as defendants, argues that the law violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments by restricting free speech and academic freedom. The plaintiffs claim the bill censors discussions on critical historical and social issues and traditional literature, threatening educational quality and accreditation. They seek an injunction to halt enforcement, citing the law’s vague penalty provisions.

Federal judge approves $2.8B settlement, paving way for colleges to pay athletes millions
SUMMARY: A federal judge approved a landmark settlement allowing U.S. college athletes to be paid millions, ending the amateurism model that defined college sports for over a century. The House settlement permits schools to share up to $20.5 million with athletes next year and pays $2.7 billion over a decade to former players. It imposes roster limits but lets cut players return without penalty, addressing walk-on concerns. Oversight shifts from the NCAA to major conferences like the ACC and SEC. While it benefits high-profile football and basketball stars, it risks cutting smaller sports and walk-ons. Legal challenges remain due to varied state NIL laws.

State Sen. David Parker announces retirement from legislature ahead of special election
SUMMARY: State Sen. David Parker announced he will step down from his District 2 seat following redrawn Senate lines in DeSoto County, prompted by NAACP litigation to increase majority-minority districts. Parker, a Republican, will not seek a fourth term, citing family and community service priorities. Two candidates, Republican Charlie Hoots and Democrat Theresa Gillespie Isom, have declared to run in the upcoming special election. Parker, an optometrist with a growing eyecare practice, plans to devote more time to his medical career. His Senate tenure included authoring water system control legislation for Jackson and involvement in a failed bill limiting the state auditor’s power. The special election primary is Aug. 5; the general election is Nov. 4.
