Tupelo-Lee Humane Society is well over capacity limit
SUMMARY: Animal shelters in North Mississippi, including the Tupelo Lee Human Society, are facing a serious problem of overcrowding. Dogs are being abandoned and left in inappropriate places, such as a restroom along the trace. The shelter is already over its capacity and cannot take in any more animals. Makeshift spaces, like a converted garage, are being used to house the excess dogs. This overcrowding is impacting the care of the animals, as staff are stretched thin and unable to provide extra attention and enrichment. It is crucial for pet owners to spay and neuter their pets to address this issue.

MHP holiday travel enforcement period begins
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has begun its holiday travel enforcement period for the Fourth of July weekend, expecting high traffic volumes nationwide. Trooper Darnika Mayfield urges drivers to be cautious, especially in active construction zones, and emphasizes the importance of sober driving, seat belt use, and obeying speed limits. With a record 61.6 million people traveling, MHP encourages designated drivers or staying home if drinking. AAA and MHP recommend vehicle maintenance checks and packing emergency kits. Last year, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 roadside assistance calls for issues like dead batteries and flat tires. Stay safe this holiday weekend.
