Hayes, who insists that he shot Smith in self-defense, was found guilty of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter after the shooting. However, the jury’s vote was 10-2 and the decision was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result, his retrial has been postponed multiple times for various reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Smith was a well-regarded defensive player for the Saints, while Hayes is a former semi-pro football player who owns a tow truck business.
