SUMMARY: Former category five hurricane Beryl, now over land, is weakening after breaking numerous records. It became the earliest category five hurricane with winds of 160 mph on July 1 and peaked at 165 mph, the strongest ever in June or July. Beryl is memorable for its high accumulated energy as well. Despite a quiet forecast, three named storms have already formed, aligning with predictions of a hyperactive 2024 hurricane season. Updated forecasts from Colorado State University and NOAA predict an “extremely active” season with up to 25 named storms, including up to 12 hurricanes and six major hurricanes, peaking in August to October.
