Tracking the Tropics: New hurricane model uses supercomputers to predict hurricanes faster than ever
SUMMARY: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has announced its new “Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System” (HAFS) as its premier hurricane forecasting model. HAFS, which operates alongside older models, utilizes updated weather and climate supercomputers, resulting in more accurate and higher-resolution forecasts. During the 2022 hurricane season, HAFS accurately predicted the rapid intensification of Hurricane Ian off the coast of Cuba. Researchers plan to continue upgrading the model over the next four years to further improve accuracy in forecasts and warnings. The NHC aims to reduce all forecast errors by nearly half compared to 2017 by 2027.
