Tracking possible Gulf development
SUMMARY: Forecasts indicate the potential development of a Gulf storm, with a 40% chance over the next week. While another system, possibly named Leslie or Kirk, is expected to form in the Atlantic, the focus remains on a system developing in the Western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Conditions appear favorable for storm growth due to high humidity and warm water; however, strong wind shear may hinder significant organization. Increased rain chances are anticipated by Thursday and Friday, particularly in Florida and Southeast Louisiana, with predictions suggesting it may be a weak system, likely a tropical depression rather than a hurricane.

Thursday 5PM Tropical Update: Milton heads out into the Atlantic
SUMMARY: A cold front has brought cooler temperatures, with highs in the 50s on the North Shore and 60s on the South Shore, while also suppressing tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico for the next 6 to 10 days. Post-tropical storm Milton, with winds at 70 mph, is no longer classified as a hurricane or tropical storm and is moving harmlessly into the Atlantic. Since 2017, the Gulf Coast has experienced 10 major hurricane landfalls, contrasting with no major events since 2005 prior. The 7-day forecast indicates significant temperature drops ahead, signaling a transition towards fall.

New Orleans rape reports skyrocket from 2014 to 2023 | Louisiana
SUMMARY: New Orleans has seen concerning crime trends, particularly in rape cases, which surged at a CAGR of 25.97% from 2014 to 2019, peaking at 774 incidents in 2019 before declining to 681 in 2023. Homicides rose significantly post-2019, reaching 198 by 2023, with a CAGR of 12.19%. Robberies, however, have decreased, dropping to just over 1,000 in 2023, while aggravated assaults grew steadily from 1,906 to 3,427, reflecting a 6.74% CAGR. Overall, violent crime trends are mixed, with a slight CAGR of 0.96% from 2014 to 2023, contrasting national increases in violent crime.
