Thompson blasts Reeves for opting out of program aimed at providing meals to impoverished children
SUMMARY: Representative Bennie Thompson criticized Governor Tate Reeves for Mississippi's decision not to join the federal program expected to enhance grocery benefits for impoverished children in the summer. The USDA's 2024 Summer EBT initiative aims to provide $120 per child to help families buy food when school meal programs are unavailable. Mississippi renounced the program despite leading the U.S. in food insecurity. Thompson denounced the decision, stressing its adverse impact on families relying on school meals. Although the program received bipartisan support, Mississippi's participation remains uncertain, with Reeves yet to comment on the matter.
