The baby names going 'extinct' in 2025, according to BabyCenter
SUMMARY: BabyCenter’s 2025 list highlights baby names at risk of going extinct, showing a significant decline in popularity. Names like “Jamie” and “Jamal” dropped the most, falling 320 and 433 spots, respectively, from the previous year. Other names for girls and boys, such as “Remy,” “Katie,” “Emery,” and “Esteban,” also saw significant decreases. Baby-naming consultant Colleen Slagen notes that trendy names often crash in popularity, advising against choosing names that rapidly rise in rankings. She highlights “Everly,” which spiked in popularity but may soon fade. More details are available at BabyCenter.com.

How to stay prepared for disasters with Columbia County alert system Hyper-Reach
SUMMARY: Columbia County EMA urges residents to sign up for the Hyper-Reach alert system to stay informed about severe weather, emergencies, and local incidents like gas leaks or utility work. Hyper-Reach sends targeted notifications from EMA, the Sheriff’s Department, National Weather Service, and others, which users can customize by alert type or location. With hurricane season underway, these alerts offer advance warning to help people prepare or evacuate if needed. Even those outside the county can register using a Columbia County address to receive updates. Savannah Council to weigh horse carriage heat limits
SUMMARY: The Savannah City Council is debating new rules to lower the maximum temperature for operating horse-drawn carriages to improve animal welfare. Currently, carriages run until a 110-degree heat index or 95-degree actual temperature. Proposed changes include lowering limits by 10 degrees and using more accurate heat measurements, such as a wet bulb calculator and monitoring horses’ internal temperatures. Supporters cite science-backed animal safety, while carriage operators warn lower limits could threaten their business, especially during warmer months. The industry brings in about \$300,000 annually. The council meeting will decide on new temperature thresholds ranging from 85 to 92 degrees.
