SUMMARY: Mississippi is struggling to fill teaching positions, with 5,012 vacancies reported in education roles, marking a slight increase from the previous school year. The Mississippi Department of Education, after surveying between August and November 2023, found an uptick in teacher and administrator shortages but a decrease in support staff vacancies. Regional disparities exist, with more vacancies filled in the northeast and southeast but growing gaps in the northwest and central areas. The state has proposed strategies including forming an advisory group, promoting new education pathways, requesting legislative support, and launching professional development portals and workshops to tackle the issue. Teacher retention efforts continue with programs like the Mississippi Teacher Residency and the Elevate Teachers Conference.

The county government, which has controlled OCH since 1973, determined that selling the hospital was necessary due to financial challenges and residents seeking care at other hospitals. The sale is expected to finalize by summer or early fall. Baptist Memorial Health Care, based in Memphis, owns multiple hospitals in Mississippi.
