Sunshine and Dry Conditions Continue, Active Tropics: Monday Evening Forecast 9/30/2024
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Grant Skinner reports an active tropical season with three named systems, none posing a threat to the U.S. The post-tropical storm Isaac is weakening, while Tropical Depression Joy is also diminishing. Tropical Storm Kirk may intensify to a major hurricane, but it will remain in the open Atlantic. A potential new system in the Eastern Atlantic is expected to form but will also stay out to sea. In the Caribbean and Southwestern Gulf, an area of disorganized showers has a medium chance of developing over the next week. The local forecast predicts dry conditions before increased rain chances by the end of the week.
Today brought temperatures slightly above average and lots of sunshine! You can expect more of the same for the first half of the work week. Into tonight, temperatures will slowly drop into the upper-60’s with low-70’s at the coastline by tomorrow morning. We will see slightly more humid conditions into Tuesday, but a lack of lift in our atmosphere will keep rain chances near zero. Highs will be back to around 90 degrees by Tuesday afternoon, and we will see just a few clouds throughout the day. Wednesday will bring more sunshine and drier conditions. By Thursday and Friday, deeper tropical moisture will move into the area bringing increased rain chances. Highs will be cooler in the mid-80’s thanks to the rain and increased cloud cover. Rip current risk will remain low until late Wednesday when it increases to moderate. In the tropics, we are still monitoring Isaac, Joyce, and Kirk, but they do not pose a threat to the US or the Gulf Coast. An area in the eastern Atlantic will likely develop into a tropical system over the next week, but it will stay out in the open Atlantic. There is one area that is expected to enter the southwestern Gulf over the next several days. It has a medium chance of development, and this would at the very least bring tropical moisture to parts of the Gulf Coast. It does not pose an immediate threat to our area.

Pensacola’s Waterfront Rescue Mission receives big food donation
SUMMARY: Pensacola’s Waterfront Rescue Mission received a significant donation of approximately 34,000 pounds of non-perishable food from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This donation will benefit thousands by supporting the Mission’s free daily meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—provided to those in need. Waterfront Rescue Mission President and CEO Clay Romano highlighted that such donations help offset operational costs and extend their reach. This marks the second large donation from the Church in two years. Jake Smith, Pensacola Stake President, emphasized the church community’s role in making the donation possible and praised the Mission’s ongoing compassionate service in Pensacola.

TROPICS | Monday Aug 11, 2025
SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Aaron formed early Monday, August 11, 2025, with maximum winds of 45 mph, moving west at 21 mph west of the Cape Verde Islands. It is expected to cross the Atlantic, strengthening into the season’s first hurricane or possibly a major hurricane by the weekend. Most models and the National Hurricane Center forecast a northward turn, reducing the likelihood of Gulf Coast impact, though uncertainty remains. Other systems, including a tropical wave in the Gulf, have low development chances but may bring rainfall. Five named storms have occurred so far; Fernon, Gabrielle, and Ombberto are next. Tick bites on the rise across the country
SUMMARY: Tick bites are increasing nationwide, with the CDC reporting the highest number of cases since 2019. In Alabama, several tick species are common, including the blacklegged, American dog, and lone star ticks. Ticks thrive in wooded and bushy areas, especially from March to October, but bites can occur year-round. Protection includes wearing long sleeves, pants, and using bug spray with 30% DEET. Ticks must be attached for about 36 hours to transmit infections, which can cause symptoms like headaches, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Early medical attention is crucial to prevent severe complications. Remove ticks promptly with tweezers and seek medical care if symptoms arise.
