Francine left good and bad during its visit to the Pine Belt
SUMMARY: Hurricane Francine’s passage through the Pine Belt elicited mixed feelings among local farmers. Pearl River County faced more impacts than others, receiving tropical storm-force winds and heavy rainfall of 6 to 8 inches. While strong winds damaged some corn crops, the severity of the impact varied based on corn variety and planting location. Despite these challenges, some farmers found benefits for their soybean crops, calling the rainfall a “drought buster.” The moisture also led to a surge in grasshopper populations, affecting soybean plants. Overall, the storm’s effects highlighted the complex relationship between weather and agriculture.
