Summer reading program begins at Laurel-Jones County Library
SUMMARY: Kids in Jones County can look forward to a fun summer at their local libraries with the popular summer reading program now underway. The initiative, designed to foster healthy reading habits during school break, offers games, stories, and registration for the program. Encouraging children to read various materials, including picture books, comic books, and even cookbooks, the program aims to make reading enjoyable for all ages and levels. Engaging with parents is also emphasized as beneficial. Libraries in Laurel and Ellisville plan more events and opportunities for the community throughout the summer.

In an attempt to prevent the infamous “Summer Slide,” the Laurel-Jones County Library kicked off the Summer Reading Program on June 4.

Keesler AFB hurricane hunters gear up for 2025 season
SUMMARY: The hurricane hunters at Keesler Air Force Base are preparing for the 2025 season, urging Mississippians to stay ready. Each year, 10 aircraft from the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron fly into hurricanes to collect critical data. They drop instruments into the eyewall to measure wind speed, direction, and pressure, which helps predict the storm’s path. This data is sent to the National Hurricane Center and used by local authorities to issue evacuation orders. Crews emphasize the importance of their work despite the risks, urging the public to heed evacuation orders, especially for storm surge and flooding, which are often the deadliest elements.

Interview: Learn the basics of CPR
SUMMARY: John highlights the importance of the heart and CPR in saving lives. Al Wright from North Mississippi Emergency Services explains that sudden cardiac arrest causes death every 90 seconds, and hands-only CPR can help by circulating oxygenated blood to the brain and organs. CPR classes last 15-20 minutes and teach chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth breathing, emphasizing the importance of rhythm and practice on mannequins. North Mississippi EMS offers free CPR and first aid workshops. CPR can mean the difference between life and death, since EMS response typically takes 5-10 minutes, but brain damage starts within 4 minutes. Classes can be scheduled by calling 662-844-5870.
