SUMMARY: American Family Care nurse practitioner Ivy Shelton is warning people about the risks associated with icy weather. She has seen cases of people slipping on ice and hitting their heads, resulting in potential concussions. In addition to accidents, cold temperatures can also lead to hypothermia, a medical emergency where the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, drowsiness, confusion, and in infants and young children, bright red, cold skin. Shelton advises taking immediate action to raise body temperature if these symptoms occur, such as wrapping in warm clothes, taking a hot bath, or drinking hot beverages.
