State Supreme Court again denies appeal for man convicted of killing Ja’Naya Thompson
SUMMARY: Alberto Julio Garcia, who was convicted in 2014 of the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl in Gulfport, has been denied a rehearing of his case. Garcia sought to have his guilty plea set aside and his appeal re-heard, claiming that the court did not consider his diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder nor object to his expert witness’s qualifications. Moreover, his second post-conviction relief request was also denied by the state Supreme Court in June. Garcia was initially sentenced to death in 2017 after confessing to the brutal crime.
