State, defense ask court to seal Herrington case files
SUMMARY: Prosecutors and defense attorneys requested the Lafayette County Circuit Court to seal the case against Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., indicted for the death of University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee, due to extensive pretrial publicity. Lee, known in Oxford’s LGBTQ community, disappeared in July 2022, sparking community fear. Herrington was arrested two weeks later and indicted for capital murder in March 2023; he was released on a $250,000 bond before his trial, scheduled for October 15, 2024. Evidence includes their text conversations and Herrington’s suspicious online searches. Lee’s body remains unfound, but investigators believe it is in Lafayette or Grenada County.
