State agencies investigating how inmate was able to escape custody in DeSoto County

SUMMARY: State officials are investigating the escape of murder suspect Joshua Zimmerman from the DeSoto County courthouse in north Mississippi. The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are looking into how he exited custody before a scheduled hearing in June. Zimmerman was apprehended after a standoff with U.S. Marshals in Chicago. District Attorney Matthew Barton indicated that the escape may have involved inside assistance, as key video footage was deleted.
