Special Olympics qualifying returns to Hattiesburg
SUMMARY: A private contractor was responsible for handling the cleanup for an event called the “Pine Belt Special Olympics” that allowed parents and athletes to participate in various sports activities such as soccer, cornhole, and softball. The event was organized by a senior named Ford Benton with help from his mom and the area director for the Special Olympics. The idea for the event grew and it is hoped that it will continue in the future. The event took place in the Hub City and marked the return of an event after more than three years.

Oak Leaf Drive home damaged by fire
SUMMARY: A home on Oak Leaf Drive caught fire, with the Jackson Fire Department receiving a call around 1 p.m. It took the firefighters almost an hour to control the flames. Woman charged with kidnapping two Vicksburg children
SUMMARY: Ronneisha Evans was arrested in Slidell, Louisiana on Monday for two charges of kidnapping. She is accused of kidnapping 3-year-old Tamerikaya Rawlings and 5-year-old Benyaaqob Rawlings from Vicksburg. The arrest was made without incident. Evans' bond is set at $400,000, with $200,000 for each charge.

Winner of The Pitch announced Monday evening
SUMMARY: In August, 20 potential entrepreneurs in Lee County pitched their business ideas to a panel of judges. From there, the selection was narrowed down to a final four. Each business owner had the opportunity to explain why they believed their small business would make a difference. The businesses included a party rental company, a salad bar, a barber shop for hair loss, and nerdesign med cart LLC, which won the grand prize. The winning business, owned by April Culvert, has patented a product that makes nurses' jobs easier by compartmentalizing Med carts. Culvert received a small seed fund and temporary space in the Renaissance Center for her business.
