Southern Pines Animal Shelter in need of donations for sewer, plumbing repairs
SUMMARY: Southern Pines Animal Shelter in Hattiesburg is seeking public donations for urgent repairs to its sewage and plumbing systems. Summer is especially challenging due to increased intake of animals and lower donations. A critical plumbing pipe near the office area is near collapse, causing water leaks. Temporary repairs are in place, but a permanent fix will cost over $8,000. Additionally, $110,000 is needed to repair transport vans essential for relocating adoptable animals to northern states. The shelter also plans to add a new building for community events and needs to fix the sewer line before its installation. Donations can be made via their website.

Fourth of July Firework Safety with AMR
SUMMARY: Eric Phillips joined Live at Nine to discuss fireworks safety, emphasizing its importance during this holiday week. Fireworks are fun but can be dangerous if not handled properly. Phillips stressed having a clear plan, choosing a safe location away from dry grass and buildings, and having one sober person in charge. Safety measures include keeping a water source or sand nearby to extinguish fires. Common mistakes include holding fireworks or relighting duds, which should be avoided. In case of injuries, call 911 immediately and rinse burns with cool water—not home remedies like mustard. Adults must supervise children closely to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.

MHP holiday travel enforcement period begins
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has begun its holiday travel enforcement period for the Fourth of July weekend, expecting high traffic volumes nationwide. Trooper Darnika Mayfield urges drivers to be cautious, especially in active construction zones, and emphasizes the importance of sober driving, seat belt use, and obeying speed limits. With a record 61.6 million people traveling, MHP encourages designated drivers or staying home if drinking. AAA and MHP recommend vehicle maintenance checks and packing emergency kits. Last year, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 roadside assistance calls for issues like dead batteries and flat tires. Stay safe this holiday weekend.

New COVID-19 variant detected in US
SUMMARY: A new COVID-19 variant called NB.1.81, also known as the Nimbus strain, is spreading across the United States, accounting for about one-third of circulating cases according to the CDC. This strain causes familiar symptoms and a new one called “razor blade sore throat.” Dr. Kristi Trim advises those with fever and symptoms to isolate until fever-free for 24 hours and symptoms improve. People exposed should watch for symptoms and avoid large gatherings. With summer heat, staying hydrated is important. The World Health Organization is monitoring the situation, but hospitalizations have not increased significantly.
