Governor clarifies why he sent National Guard to D.C. and not Jackson
SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves deployed about 200 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., but chose not to send them to Jackson despite its high homicide rates. Jackson, known as “America’s murder capital,” experienced over 160 homicides in 2021. Reeves supports President Trump’s efforts against violent crime in D.C. but believes legislative measures in Jackson are effectively addressing the problem. In 2023, the GOP-led legislature expanded Capitol Police jurisdiction and established an inferior court to handle cases. Reeves highlighted increased police hiring and new judicial appointments, noting a decline in homicides in 2025 and confidence in the city’s new mayor. He remains open to deploying troops if needed.

Although alcohol use is declining nationally, the Magee Center promotes harm reduction during Recovery Awareness Month. They recommend safer drinking practices and offer alcohol-free tailgates and hydration stations during football games to support sober students.
