Sheriff speaks out on Raymond Detention Center

SUMMARY: The Raymond Detention Center in Hinds County, Mississippi has transferred 200 detainees to a facility in Tallahatchie County operated by CoreCivic, reducing the number of detainees at the center to less than 400. This transfer allows the closure of Pod A, which was considered the least secure area of the facility. Detainees will still have limited access to transportation for court appearances and visitation. Sheriff Tyree Jones stated that Pod A will remain closed indefinitely unless it is renovated. A new jail is currently being built, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2025. The contract with CoreCivic is for beds rather than detainees.
