Mississippi governor deploying national guard troops to Washington, D.C.
SUMMARY: Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves approved deploying 200 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., backing President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the city’s police force and surge of federal agents. Trump’s move follows rising violent crime, including the recent assault of a government employee and last year’s fatal carjacking of former official Mike Gill. Reeves said the Guard will help “restore law and order” and ensure public safety. Trump has 30 days of emergency control but may extend it through a national emergency. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is suing over the takeover. Other GOP governors are also sending troops.
