SUMMARY: The Pearl Board of Aldermen voted 5-2 to reject a citizen-approved ordinance allowing liquor stores within city limits, despite nearly 60% of voters supporting it in a June referendum. Pearl, a Rankin County suburb, remains in a dry county where liquor sales require special approval. Although Pearl has resort status permitting wine and liquor by the glass in restaurants and beer sales in stores, residents must still travel elsewhere for liquor purchases. Mayor Jake Windham, who opposed liquor stores but supported honoring the vote, expressed disappointment, emphasizing the importance of respecting citizens’ voices and preventing retail leakage.
