Republican lawmakers are backing dozens of bills targeting diversity efforts on campus and elsewhere
SUMMARY: Republicans in various state legislatures are introducing a series of bills aimed at defunding or prohibiting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at public institutions, including universities and K-12 schools. Around 50 bills in 20 states propose restrictions or demand public disclosures of DEI programs. This follows efforts to target DEI the previous year, with the Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action influencing the current legal approach to diversity. While some Republicans seek to dismantle DEI claiming it promotes ideology, Democrats defend these initiatives as essential for diverse communities. Florida and Texas have already passed laws against DEI initiatives in higher education, inspiring similar moves in other states. The clampdown on DEI is linked to earlier campaigns against critical race theory, which republicans equate with DEI’s application in institutions.

New cast, no problem: Ole Miss handles Georgia State in 63-7 blowout
SUMMARY: Ole Miss, after losing 18 starters, dominated Georgia State 63-7 in week one under coach Lane Kiffin. Sophomore QB Austin Simmons debuted with 341 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions but improved as the game progressed. Running back Kewan Lacy led with 108 yards and three touchdowns, highlighting Ole Miss’ improved running game. The defense, led by coordinator Pete Golding, stifled Georgia State’s offense, allowing just 260 total yards. Special teams’ Lucas Carneiro contributed two field goals. Coach Kiffin praised Lacy’s versatility but noted inconsistency in the offensive line. Ole Miss next faces Kentucky on September 6 in Lexington for revenge after last year’s home loss.
