Questions swirl around passage of MAEP alternative
SUMMARY: The Mississippi House passed a bill to replace the MAEP, sparking questions about its origins. Some lawmakers suspect conservative think tanks influenced the legislation. Rep. Robert Johnson claimed the data was misrepresented, with the Legislative Budget Office unable to verify it. The bill's authors deny third-party involvement, stating they developed the formula with input from teachers and MDE. Rep. Rob Roberson defended the bill, stating it was their creation and a miscommunication with the LBO. Johnson emphasizes the importance of trustworthy data in rewriting the MAEP. The bill's authors maintain they worked with teachers and MDE to develop the formula.
