Puppies rescued from flood-stricken Texas arrive at Chicago shelter
SUMMARY: Nine puppies from flood-ravaged Texas arrived at PAWS Chicago’s no-kill shelter, joining dozens already relocated to assist overwhelmed Texas shelters. The pups flew into Wisconsin and traveled by van to Chicago. Austin Pets Alive! coordinated the rescue with PAWS Chicago to free shelter space for displaced animals from the catastrophic floods that killed at least 132 people. PAWS Chicago has a history of disaster relief dating to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and recent responses to hurricanes and storms. The rescued dogs are receiving medical care and will soon be available for adoption or fostering, while volunteers hope they find loving homes swiftly.

South Mississippi vascular surgeon discusses chronic venous insufficiency following Trump’s diagnosis
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump was recently diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a common condition where malfunctioning vein valves allow blood to flow backward, causing vein enlargement and leg swelling. Dr. Keith Thompson, a vascular surgeon in D’Iberville, Mississippi, says CVI affects up to 50% of people over age 50. While typically mild, untreated cases can cause burning, cramps, or discomfort. Treatments are simple, including weight loss, compression stockings, and minor procedures. For most, including the president, it’s manageable. Dr. Thompson emphasizes early treatment and lifestyle changes to prevent symptoms from worsening and improve daily quality of life.

House sends bill regulating stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency, to Trump
SUMMARY: The House passed three major cryptocurrency bills, advancing President Trump’s push to make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the world.” One bipartisan bill regulates stablecoins and heads to Trump’s desk, while the others—creating a crypto market structure and banning a central bank digital currency—go to the Senate. The stablecoin bill sets consumer protections and issuer requirements. Industry advocates praise the legislation as legitimizing crypto, while critics warn of weak oversight and conflicts of interest tied to Trump’s financial ties to crypto ventures. Democrats raised concerns about private digital currencies by tech giants and the bill’s lack of presidential accountability.

US retail sales bounce around in a whipsaw trade environment
SUMMARY: In June, U.S. retail sales rose 0.6% after two months of declines, showing resilient consumer spending despite tariff concerns and economic uncertainty. Auto sales led gains, with increases in clothing and personal care, while electronics and appliances declined. Consumers prioritized necessities but maintained modest discretionary spending, such as dining out. Inflation rose to 2.7% yearly, driven by tariffs, complicating Federal Reserve decisions on interest rates. Online sales surged during Amazon’s Prime event, with shoppers focusing on essentials. Retailers prepare for a strong back-to-school season amid ongoing trade policy challenges, adjusting inventories and prices to manage tariff impacts.
