SUMMARY: Rep. Carlos Gimenez toured the Krome detention center, acknowledging tough but not inhumane conditions despite reports of overcrowding. He noted the facility holds about 1,000 detainees with an average stay of 27 days before deportation. Gimenez said he saw no one sleeping on floors or missing meals, highlighting adequate bathrooms and showers in dormitory-style housing. While detainees sometimes express complaints, Gimenez said many claims didn’t hold up on inspection. He recommended increasing recreation time, citing capacity limits restricting detainee movement. The center has faced criticism from Democrats, especially after detainees spelled out SOS in distress, but Gimenez found no alarming issues.

After touring the overcrowded Krome detention center, Rep. Carlos Gimenez said conditions aren’t pleasant but found no signs of inhumane treatment.
