Petal business owner against House Bill 430
SUMMARY: Mississippi Senate for consideration. If passed, House Bill 430 will allow direct shipment of wine and spirits to homes if not available through the state’s alcohol beverage control warehouse. Out-of-state dealers would need a permit, packages must be labeled as containing alcohol, and someone 21 or older must sign for the delivery. Cynthia Holland, owner of The Wine Cellar, believes the legislation would harm small liquor stores by potentially reducing product variety. She trusts state representatives to bring in popular products and provide a wide selection for customers. The bill now awaits approval by the Mississippi Senate.

First West Nile Virus death reported in Mississippi for 2025
SUMMARY: The West Nile virus has been present in Mississippi since 2001, with fluctuating case numbers over the years. August is peak mosquito season, increasing the risk of infection. The virus spreads primarily through bites from infected mosquitoes. Precautions include avoiding outdoor activities at dawn and dusk, wearing long sleeves despite the heat, and using insect repellent containing DEET. Although cases are currently lower than in previous years, the first West Nile-related death of the year occurred in Washington County. Symptoms resemble the flu and appear days to weeks after a bite. Medical care focuses on managing symptoms, as there is no cure. Removing standing water helps reduce mosquito populations.
