SUMMARY: Chinstrap penguins in Antarctica have adapted to their high-stress breeding environment by taking thousands of mini-catnaps each day, totaling around 11 hours of sleep. This allows them to stay vigilant while guarding their eggs and chicks in noisy, crowded colonies. Researchers tracked their sleeping behavior by measuring brain waves and found that these microsleeps have restorative functions. While other animals have sleeping adaptations, penguins appear to have a unique approach to dealing with constant vigilance and high-stress environments. This study sheds light on the sleeping habits of penguins and how they are able to successfully raise their young under challenging conditions.

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
