SUMMARY: A group led by Ellen Turko is working to preserve the historic Mount Olive Cemetery in Jackson State, Mississippi. With a $1 million grant from the National Park Service, the team aims to uncover hidden headstones and learn more about the oldest private black cemetery in the nation. They are also repairing damaged graves and cleaning the grounds. One notable feature of the cemetery is believed to be the first African-American statues in Mississippi, honoring Jim Hill and Ida Revels Redmond. Phase two of the project, including ground penetration radar, will begin later this fall.
