SUMMARY: Natchez has elected its first pet mayor, a black lab named Mary Frances, following a spirited campaign. Mary Frances, known for her greeter role at Darby’s downtown shop, defeated fellow candidate Roni by 321 votes. The election also raised funds for local animal organizations. Though this was her first official campaign, Mary Frances had been the “unofficial Pet Mayor” for over a decade. The election also led to the appointment of other pet officials, including Roni as Chief of PAWlice and Dart as FUR Chief. The new officials will be sworn in during a public collaring ceremony on May 10.

SUMMARY: As Memorial Day approaches, many will gather for barbecues, prompting the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to share grilling safety tips. Key advice includes checking propane tanks for leaks, keeping grills clean from grease buildup, placing grills away from homes and flammable objects, and always opening the lid before lighting gas grills. Children and pets should stay three feet away, and only charcoal starter fluid should be used for charcoal grills. The NFPA warns against leaving grills unattended and emphasizes cooling coals before disposal. From 2019 to 2023, gas grills caused an average of 9,287 home fires annually, often due to unclean grills. Following safety measures can reduce fire risks and injuries.

SUMMARY: Windsor Ruins, the remains of Mississippi’s largest antebellum mansion, underwent preservation by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH), including a new walking trail and interpretive signs. The site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features 23 full and five partial columns that survived an 1890 fire. Built in 1861 on a 2,500-acre cotton plantation worked by over 300 enslaved people, Windsor is historically significant, including ties to the Civil War. MDAH’s stabilization project, started in 2016 and completed in 2024, reinforced masonry and repaired deterioration. Four iron staircases survived, with one preserved at Alcorn State University.
