SUMMARY: Officials in Pass Christian, Mississippi, broke ground on a new $2.5 million pedestrian walkway, marking phase one of four. The walkway, celebrated by local mayors, will eventually extend over 20 miles along the coast from Pass Christian to Biloxi. Funding comes from grants like the $5.9 million awarded in 2019. The path, partly funded by the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, aims to enhance tourism and control sand blowing onto the highway. Pass Christian Mayor Jimmy Rafferty and others voiced their support for the project at the event, which also featured remarks from Gov. Tate Reeves and Gen. Joe Spraggins.

SUMMARY: Richard Gerald Jordan, Mississippi’s longest-serving death row inmate, is scheduled for execution on June 25 despite his request to block it being denied by U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate. Jordan’s attorneys argued that the state’s three-drug execution protocol—using midazolam, rocuronium bromide, and potassium chloride—could cause severe pain if midazolam fails to induce unconsciousness, violating the Eighth Amendment. The state countered that consciousness checks mitigate this risk. Judge Wingate ordered officials to halt the execution if Jordan remains conscious after midazolam administration. The U.S. Supreme Court also refused to stay the execution. Jordan was convicted of a 1976 kidnapping and murder during a failed ransom plot.

SUMMARY: Mississippi officials reacted strongly to U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites amid Iran-Israel tensions. President Trump announced successful B-2 bomber strikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities to halt nuclear enrichment, calling Iran a “bully” and warning of future attacks if peace is not made. Iran vowed to continue its nuclear work despite the strikes. Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson condemned the attacks as an “illegal act of war” without Congressional approval, aligning with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s constitutional concerns. Meanwhile, Governor Tate Reeves, Senator Roger Wicker, and others praised Trump’s decisive military action and called for prayers and support for troops.
