SUMMARY: Amid a national syphilis surge, University of Mississippi pharmacy professors and the State Department of Health are acting to curb its spread. From 2018 to 2022, U.S. syphilis cases rose 80%, with Mississippi among the worst affected. The state saw an 80% increase overall and a dramatic 1,000% rise in congenital syphilis. Syphilis, a treatable bacterial infection spread through sexual contact, often starts with painless lesions and can cause serious complications if untreated, including blindness and brain damage. Detection requires testing at health providers or via home kits. Prevention tips include regular testing, safe sex, partner communication, and seeking medical advice promptly.

www.supertalk.fm – J.T. Mitchell – 2025-08-24 21:14:00

SUMMARY: Bluesky, a social media platform once funded by Twitter, has temporarily blocked access in Mississippi due to a new state law requiring age verification for social media users. The law, passed in 2024 after a tragic sextortion case, mandates platforms verify users are over 18 or have parental consent. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed enforcement to proceed while legal challenges continue. Bluesky cited concerns about privacy, free speech, and the high costs of compliance, arguing the law disproportionately impacts smaller platforms. Users from Mississippi now see a message explaining the block. Bluesky remains committed to child safety while advocating for balanced regulations.
